USPS is currently overwhelmed with packages. Not only has this resulted in massively delayed shipping times for packages shipped through USPS, it also means many postal workers do not have time to check packages in and out.
Typically, postal workers will scan the shipping labels on these packages, sending the tracking information to the customer. When packages are not scanned, the tracking information does not update. In many cases, the package is still in transit as usual - it has simply not been scanned, and therefore the tracking information has not been updated.
